Do you love Food Photography? Or, are you thinking of starting to take Food Photos? Here is a great interview we just did with none other than Food Photographer, Eitan Frysh of “Eat In Fresh!”
Let’s jump in!
What made you start taking Food Photography and sharing with others what you cook in your kitchen?!
Food and cooking have always been somewhat silent passions of mine. It never took the spotlight when it came to my professional aspirations, but always ended up being something that I just did. Starting in high school, I would habitually bake cookies between 1-2 times a week.
I baked in part because I enjoyed the process, but seeing that instant when the sweet warm and fun flavors of my pastries hit people’s faces filled me with joy.
I wasn’t always a fantastic photographer. Looking through my old albums on my computer can easily confirm that. However, I was told that I had an eye for things. Mostly I didn’t know how to use a camera to get the results I wanted. Eventually, things somewhat clicked for me one day when I was cooking with friends.
I had been experimenting with sourdough (be careful, it is a rabbit hole that many have gotten lost in after looking into it) and had some extra dough sitting in my fridge, which had somewhat over fermented. One of my friends came over and we decided to try and make a pizza from it. Several toppings and a broiled egg after, my friend suggested that I take a photo of it to pop up on Instagram. After posting it and feeling like I was able to make everyone’s face light up, like I had baked each one of them a cookie… I was hooked.
I kept my personal page up-to-date with what I was cooking (the images photogenic, or not..) for about a year or two. Only after I started feeling that my photos were consistently looking professional I decided to rebrand from my personal page, which never broke 400 followers, into Eat In Fresh.
What are some of your favorite items to make in your kitchen?
Bread, bread and bread! Working dough is one of my favorite things to do in the kitchen. There is something so tactile and satisfying about kneading and shaping dough that makes you feel like you can truly put a part of yourself into your food.
I will often choose to spend the extra 30-40 minutes it takes to slap and fold the dough for a loaf of bread just to make sure the gluten strands are strong enough to create a windowpane.
That way I know that when the yeast breaths a breath of air into what starts out as a wet ball of flour, that it was something I made happen. Beyond that, there is something fun about closing a dough ball in a Dutch oven, waiting 30 minutes and being surprised with what comes out.
How has your food journey evolved since starting an Instagram and Facebook Food Page? What other Social Media avenues are you going to be exploring?
As I mentioned earlier, I actually started out with a personal Instagram account. My food posts were more like a journal of my home cooking than a food photography blog. Since I decided to transition to ‘Eat In Fresh’ a number of things have changed. I was invited to do a food demo at Williams Sonoma and now have several other food demos scheduled!
My upcoming dates: 1pm-3pm at Manhattan Beach on September 14, & 1pm-3pm in Santa Monica on September 28. I will be making a trio of tacos for tastings with a $5 donation to No Kid Hungry.
On top of that I have started catering friend’s events, and I am working on developing a YouTube page. Being able to share what I am so passionate about just keeps opening doors and creating opportunities to grow!
Can you share with our readers a few Food Photography tips? We love your Instagram account and your images are first-rate, just beautiful!
The old adage of the best camera is the camera you have on you is exactly right! I have used my Iphone 7+ for all of my photos. The camera doesn’t make the photo. Learning the fundamentals of lighting and composition really are the key to great photographs.
I found channels like The Bite Shot on YouTube and spent time learning how to use apps like Lightroom.
It made a world of a difference! Truly the best secrets to Food Photography are lighting and composition.
For aspiring Foodies, how do you suggest they get started?
Start taking photos and putting them out there! The best way to learn how to make a better product is to allow what your making to be judged by the court of public opinion. Like I mentioned before, I really started posting on my personal, but still public account. Using a personal account to figure things out and work out the rough spots is a fantastic way to hone your craft.
Once you feel like you have something, and are getting support from friends, family and strangers, take a break from posting.
Build up a few months of content and prepare a rollout for a new profile. Having a plan, a style and enough content to keep a consistent feed for a while, that will allow you to really jump start your foodie aspirations.
Your username on Instagram is Eatinfresh… We also love fresh foods. How often do you go grocery shopping, and where are your favorite places to go in Los Angeles, California?
I am at Trader Joe’s at least once a week for my kitchen basics (milk, eggs, coffee, cheese and a few veggies here and there). I also make sure to be up at 6am every Wednesday to go to the Santa Monica Farmers Market. It truly is the best place to get fresh produce in Los Angeles.
I try to use whatever is in season and catches my eye to inspire what I cook and photograph for my profile.
Outside of that, I’m likely to stop by Whole Foods, or another grocery store for a few extras that I may need from time to time.
