Portion Sizes: Where’d we go wrong?
Is eating a smaller meal dieting?
It depends on how small of a meal you are talking about… When dining out, smaller sized meals may be better. Even opting to go with an appetizer may be wise, if you are dining at a restaurant that is known for larger portion sizes. My opinion, opting for a smaller portion size is not to be taken as dieting when you are trying to bring normalcy back into your eating habits. Actually, 20+ years ago in Canada people were of a much healthier weight, and the smaller portion sizes were considered to be normal at restaurants. I remember having a glass of juice when I was a kid while at a restaurant; it consisted of a small glass, maybe 4 ounces of apples juice or orange juice. Nowadays, kids have 16 ounces, and some parents think that this is okay, and normal. The amount of sugar alone, is enough to spike anyone’s blood sugar levels.
I think it is time to take the guilt out of eating at restaurants. How? By reducing portion sizes to a reasonable size. It is quite common place for a person to feel guilty and overly full because he or she has over eaten. Let’s put the focus back on healthier food items, and smaller portion sizes.
But what about restaurants who are all about bigger meal items?!
True, some restaurants pride themselves in offering bigger portion sizes; they’re known for it. If that is their marketing tool, at least people can come prepared with a doggy bag. What I’m curious about, where are all of the restaurants that are known for smaller portion sizes? Tapas bars?
What about the ability for men to consume more food than a lot of women?
I know men can eat more than women, most of the time. Yet still, the majority of the time, they don’t eat that much more… What are your thoughts? This has been a pet peeve of mine for some years now. I’ve always been the grazer; the person who doesn’t finish a meal. Honestly, I just can’t eat all of the food on my plate most of the time when dining out at a restaurant. It’s not too often I finish a plate of food while dining-out. Maybe you can relate? If you would like some good tips on how to control your portion sizes, click here
