Market’s Tuna Salad was my perfect idea of a healthy meal!
The salad consisted of BC Albacore tuna, poplar bluff potatoes, tomato, and a tarragon vinaigrette. The unique addition of two boiled quail eggs was a surprising and lovely touch! I eat quail eggs all the time at home – so to see them on my plate at Market was very endearing! I felt at home.
With my salad, there were light salad vegetables as well – cucumbers with a slight pickled taste, and fresh greens to brighten up the dish. The flavours complimented each other incredibly. The chefs clearly take a very artistic approach to their food – my salad was arranged crescent style along one side of my plate, with a dollop of a home-made herbed mayonnaise to accompany the other wonderful flavours. The tuna was soft on the inside, and lightly seared on the outside. They didn’t over season the tuna, so the actual flavour of the fish came through. They had little baby purple potatoes, boiled to the perfect texture, alongside sliced fresh grape tomatoes. With a quick dash of salt to taste, as well as a squeeze of fresh lemon from my lemon water, the flavours were perfect.
Now – this is hard to explain – but, the reason I loved this meal so much is because it was the type of meal that allowed me to pay the perfect amount of attention to it. It didn’t taste so strong and over-the-top that I was obsessed with it (like you know you are with mini donuts – when you get to the “inhaling it” stage – yuck!), rather, it tasted delicious and rich enough that I could enjoy it, savor it, respect it, cherish it! The portion size was perfect!
Because I follow the Perfect Heath Diet by Paul and Sou-Ching Jaminet, I look for meals with a healthy, fatty meat, a small amount of healthy, grain free starch, as well as veggies. I also look to avoid large amounts of dairy, as well as completely avoid most vegetable oils and sugar. This meal not only pleased my palate, but it meshed with my personal values around how meals should be nutritionally and ethically.
Market is doing an incredible job at creating a space where an ethical, sustainable, local, fresh, “arm’s reach approach” to food is partnered with high level creativity as well as beautiful restaurant ambiance. This restaurant has everything I look for in what I can call a favourite place to dine!
POSITIVES
Everything I look for in a meal that is tasty and nutritionally proper!
This isn’t bad – but I felt the need to add a squeeze of my lemon to the salad – which is personal preference!
